A Low-Cost and Efficient Microstrip-Fed Air-Substrate-Integrated Waveguide Slot Array

A microstrip-fed air-substrate-integrated waveguide (ASIW) slot array with high efficiency and low cost is presented. The design cuts out the substrate material within SIW, replaces vias metallic sidewalls, uses a simple microstrip line-waveguide transition to feed array. Radiating slots are cut on 5-mil brass-plate, which covers top of cutout resemble hollow structure. This implementation provides efficient antenna solution for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) applications. Meanwhile, fabrication compatible standard printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing process. To demonstrate concept, 4-element ASIW working at n257 band 5G communications was designed using low-cost Rogers 4350B FR4 materials. Our simulation result shows 18% more than conventional SIW same substrate. fabricated prototype |S11| < −15 dB over 27–29 GHz peak realized gain 10.1 dBi 28.6 GHz. procedure, prototyping process, analysis discussed in paper.
